Skylights in San Jose: installation, replacement and repair

Quick answer

A skylight brings daylight into a room, and the way it is flashed into the roof decides whether it stays dry. Golden Sky Roofing Inc installs and replaces skylights in San Jose and repairs the flashing around them. The estimate is free and the proposal is in writing.

Skylight repair for flashing and leaks. The flashing is the part that keeps water out around the opening. It is where skylight problems often start.

Why flashing decides whether a skylight stays dry

A skylight cuts a hole in the roof. Water running down the roof has to be directed around that hole by flashing that is worked into the roofing on all four sides. When the flashing is done poorly or wears out, water finds its way in along the frame, and the first sign is often a stain on the ceiling below.

That is why a skylight job depends so much on the roof around it. Golden Sky Roofing is owned by Jose Dominguez, and you can read about him on his page.

Signs a skylight needs attention

Water marks near a skylight can start at the glass seal, the flashing or the raised curb that supports the frame. Note whether the mark appears only after rain or also during dry weather. From inside, look for damp trim and changes in the stain. Photograph what you can see safely, without climbing onto the roof.

  • Water stains around the frame or on the ceiling below
  • Condensation or fogging between the panes
  • Cracked or damaged glass or frame
  • Drafts or heat gain around the opening
  • An older skylight that predates the current roof

Replace the skylight with the roof or separately

If you are replacing the roof, it is an ideal time to replace or add a skylight, since the roofing around it is already being redone and the flashing can be built into the new roof. See roof replacement. If the skylight is sound but the flashing has aged, we can look at the flashing on its own. See roof repair. If the skylight is leaking right now, see urgent roof repair.

Yes. We look at the roof, the framing and the room below, and recommend where the skylight will work best. A written proposal follows the free on-site estimate.

Sometimes. If the flashing or the seal around the frame is the problem, that can often be addressed on its own. If the skylight itself is cracked or worn out, replacement may be the better fix. We tell you which on site.

Most often the flashing or the seal around the frame has worn out. Condensation can also leave stains, so an on-site look tells you which one it is.

That usually means the seal on the glass unit has failed. We look at it on site and tell you what it needs.

It can. Heat gain depends on the skylight’s size, placement and glass, and how much sun the opening gets. Tell us which room it is for and we talk through placement at the estimate.
